Because of cutbacks in the State of Michigan budget for preventative
dental care for adults with disabilities, such as routine
cleanings, an Adopt-A-Smile Dental Campaign has been initiated
by MORC.
Recent studies have shown that good dental health has a direct
relationship to a person’s overall health. Infections
caused by poor dental care have been known to travel throughout
the body. For example, poor dental care has been linked to
problem pregnancies, complications with diabetes, coronary
disease, and stroke.
For many people with disabilities, teeth are being pulled
instead of saved. The Adopt-A-Smile Dental Campaign is attempting
to help people one by one. You can become involved in this
effort by asking your dentist or other dentists to “adopt”
a person with a disability with dental needs by providing
free or reduced cost dental care.
So far, a handful of dentists have participated in the Adopt-A-Smile
Dental Campaign. Other dentists are desperately needed.
