Respite Services

What Is Respite?

  • Respite means a period of relief. MORC’s respite services program provides intermittent, short-term, hourly, or overnight relief for eligible families of children and adults with developmental disabilities who are currently living with their parent(s) or guardian in Oakland County, Michigan.

Why Are Respite Services Needed?

  • It is a tremendous challenge to be the parent(s) or guardian of a person with a developmental disability. Sometimes they need the relief that only a respite program can provide. They might need someone to care for this person while they go out for the evening, during a vacation, for a family outing, when someone in the family is ill, or when they simply need to take a break. Respite care can make life a little easier for every member of the family.

Where Are Respite Services Provided?

  • Respite services may be provided in the family home or in the home of a relative or friend chosen by the individual with a developmental disability and his or her parent(s) or guardian.
  • Respite services are offered at three, licensed, residential respite homes.
  • Enrollment in some camp programs may also be considered a respite service.
  • MORC supports respite and recreation programs provided through contracted Oakland County schools for people with developmental disabilities up to age 26.
  • Shared Parenting is another respite care service that provides a higher level of relief to natural families by allowing them to recruit one or two other families to share the caretaking role.

Where Are The Licensed Residential Respite Homes Located?

  • Lahser Respite Home is located in Beverly Hills, Michigan. The home is licensed to provide residential respite care to six children with developmental disabilities, including those with physical challenges, who are between 5 and 18 years old.
  • Hickory Grove Respite Home is located in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. The home is licensed to provide residential respite care to six adults with developmental disabilities who are 18 years of age and older.

How Much Does It Cost?

  • Payment for respite services depends upon the family’s ability to pay. No one is denied service based on lack of financial resources.
